Biochar & Renewable Energy Development Project

645 N. Hamlin Rd
Tipton, CA 93272

The Tule River Economic Development Corporation is advancing an innovative biochar and renewable energy project that will support sustainable land management, local job creation, and clean energy production within the Tribe.

This project represents a strategic investment in sustainable economic development, renewable energy generation, and long-term environmental stewardship for the Tule River tribe.

Project Status

The project is currently in the development and planning phase. Several key studies and technical reports have already been completed, and we are nearing finalization of the site plan for development, permitting, and process implementation.

This project is subject to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). These regulatory frameworks guide the environmental review process and determine the technical and environmental studies required to ensure responsible development.

Proven Technology & Biomass Supply

We have successfully completed both small-scale and large-scale production trials.  The results also support qualification for Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) credits within the Voluntary Carbon Market, creating potential long-term revenue streams while contributing to climate mitigation efforts.

How the System Works

Biochar is produced through a process called pyrolysis, where biomass is heated in a low-oxygen environment. During production:

  • The Biochar Production Unit (BPUs) convert woodchips into high-quality biochar.

  • Waste heat and syngas generated during production are captured by the Heat Recovery Units.

  • The captured heat is routed to the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Power Modules.

  • The ORC system converts waste heat into electricity for onsite use.

This integrated system maximizes efficiency by transforming what would otherwise be waste heat into usable renewable energy.

Onsite Energy & Storage

In addition to electricity generated through biochar production, the facility will include:

  • Battery storage systems to store electricity generated from both the biochar system and existing solar panels.

  • An integrated power management approach to support reliable onsite energy use.

This approach enhances energy independence and operational resilience.

Supporting Equipment

The project also includes the purchase of a front-end loader to efficiently handle and load biomass (woodchips) into the system to feed the Biochar Production Units. Plus the planned purchase of Walking Floor Trailers and electric vehicles including forklifts, an electric semi, and electric pick up trucks.

What is the goal of the project?

  • Improve soil health, sequester carbon, and improve soil fertility.
  • Enable improved agricultural productivity.
Better manage local waste biomass such as forestry residuals and agricultural wastes through biochar production.
  • Reduce the risk of wildfire in the forest and improve forest health.
  • This project will create meaningful employment opportunities within the community. These roles will support plant operations, maintenance, engineering oversight, and commercial development of biochar and carbon credit markets.
